Following the program, Mr. Andy reintroduced to teachers the books currently used to teach in Binh Minh’s curriculum, namely Explore Our World 1 and 2, and at the same time, introduced the new set of books Wonderful World 3. In addition, in order for teachers to have the most authentic view of the application in the lessons, the program also has Demo lessons to guide teaching Phonics lessons according to the material and how to exploit pictures, implement Unit Opener lessons.

To keep the atmosphere lively, the organizers also had activities and entertaining games after intense training hours to promote the exchange of all teachers attending the program.

1. The places you’ll go…

One of the best things about teaching English abroad is how many travel opportunities you will have. First of all your destination country will be full of places to explore and discover. Adventure is only a bus or train ride away! Secondly, you will find yourself with a base of operations to travel to neighbouring countries that would usually cost an arm and a leg to travel to from home. The travel opportunities are endless and, if like me you are working in a school setting, the holidays are great meaning plenty of time to venture a little further afield.

2. You’re immersed in the culture

Living and working in a country is my favourite way to travel as it really allows you to understand the people and culture. Teaching English abroad gives you a unique insight into a culture as your students will be so excited to teach you about their traditions and local festivals. There will be so many opportunities to learn from the community that will become your home. As a tourist, you might see a country but as an English teacher you will feel a country and it will steal a piece of your heart.

3. The friends for life

When you first move abroad those around you become your new family, they are there to support you in the difficult times and laugh with you through the good times. There’s nothing like the shared experience of trying to communicate, in a language you’ve just begun learning, in a local supermarket to bond people together!

This might just be the best thing about being an English teacher because you can never get bored of the job! I have had jobs where I’m teaching the same lesson to 20 different classes over a week but each of those classes reacted completely differently to the material. One class might love songs and dancing while another might like drawing and making, it’s all about adapting your core lesson plan to fit their vibe. Add to that the occasional request to appear on local television (true story: I was asked to appear on local Chinese news to encourage young people to play traditional instruments) or host an English-speaking competition and you have yourself a new adventure every day!

6. You’ll learn so much about yourself

It’s an age-old trope, travelling to find yourself, but you really will learn so much about yourself as you teach English abroad. Being an English teacher will push you to use skills you didn’t even know you had, it will show you your strengths and it will allow you to grow beyond what you thought was possible. I cannot say this enough; if you want a job that doesn’t feel like work then you need to teach English abroad! • Insufficient accreditation

How do you spot the quality accreditations from the wastes of time? Look for the course providers that are accredited by recognised and established bodies, that aren’t focused solely on TEFL (and profit). These are usually government-run or government-affiliated bodies, like Ofqual.

A TEFL course should be seen as an investment, as you can gain so much from completing a quality course (like a good quality job). So, making sure you getting the one with the best content should be really important. At the end of the day, there’s no point wasting money on a course you’ll learn nothing from!

• Lack of support

A PGCE is a British qualification that enables University graduates to teach in state schools across the country.  Whilst having a PGCE will certainly help you towards obtaining teaching positions overseas, it is often not enough to secure you a job alone: although many schools recognise the qualification, others do not. If you want to teach English as a foreign language, you’ll need a TEFL Course!  That, combined with your PGCE will put you one step ahead of the competition, making it a lot easier for you to find work overseas!

2. Do I need a TEFL qualification if I have a PGCE?

Ultimately, the answer is yes. With a PGCE, you’ll already be qualified to teach in the UK; but employers overseas specifically ask for a TEFL qualification so if you don’t have one listed on your CV, they could automatically overlook you.

But, armed with a TEFL qualification and a PGCE, you’ll have a much better chance of finding work pretty much anywhere in the world – wahoo! The more competitive countries like Japan, South Korea, and Western Europe (where wages are higher) are looking for qualified teachers with degrees, so you’ll be in the best position to secure these jobs.

If high wages and attractive benefits are what you’re after, then you’re in luck, as you can turn your attention to the Middle East.  Positions are notoriously hard to land here – and really, why shouldn’t they be: we’re talking monthly tax-free salaries of $3,400 upwards (approximately £2,500), free luxury accommodation, and free flights back home!  To secure one of these exclusive jobs, you’ll need experience to add to that qualification.  So get TEFL-qualified and work for a year overseas; then couple that with your PGCE and you’ll be a highly desirable candidate for a TEFL job in the Middle East!

3. Can I teach in an international school with just a PGCE?

Theoretically, yes: students at these schools will be fluent in English – either speaking it as their first language or being bilingual.  In fact, you won’t be required to teach English as a foreign language, you’ll be picking up the usual teaching subjects instead.

So ultimately, if you want to teach abroad, a TEFL certificate is a wise move, even if you do have a PGCE.  Armed with these two qualifications, you’ll be head and shoulders above competitors, making it much easier to secure a position.  In addition to all of the amazing travelling you’ll get to enjoy, you’ll also gain so much useful experience whilst TEFLing.
